Hiccups – a modern day medicine mystery
As ridiculous as a hiccup may sound, doctors still have no absolute clue on what is the main reason for which we get hiccups.
The scientific name for hiccups is synchronous diaphragmatic flutter (SDF), or singultus. This comes from Latin and means “the act of catching one’s breath while sobbing.” As Dr. Anton Emmanuel, of the British Society of Gastroenterology, explains: “An irritation of the diaphragm causes hiccups.”
The common factors that usually irritate the diaphragm are rich, fatty foods, curries, fizzy drinks, and alcohol. But, at the same time, a hiccup can be triggered by a sudden change in the room temperature, smoking or even a stressful situation.
Please note that hiccups sometimes can have more serious causes. William A. Whitelaw, a professor at the University of Calgary, explains: “For hiccups that stay longer than usual, treatment for stomach acid reflux is usually offered before other investigations are done.”
