During the holidays, we all eat more pie, cookies and other baked goods. But with the sweetness, another uninvited enemy may come: tooth pain!
As MS, RD, Barrie Wolf-Radbille, a respected nutritionist with the New York University Program for Surgical Weight Loss explains: “As soon as temperatures drop, our appetite goes up for high-calorie, high-carbohydrate foods.” And sugar, of course. As nobody wants to go running for a dentist on New Year’s Eve, find now a truly life-saving advice for those sudden tooth pains that make you pull your hair!
The easiest and fastest way to calm a painful tooth
Please be advised, the following remedy is not indicated for vampires or other creatures of the night. For this simple, yet incredibly effective remedy for emergency toothaches, you will need:
- a teaspoon of crushed garlic
- a teaspoon of peanut butter
- 1 glass of warm water and a pinch of salt
Once you have all the ingredients, follow these 4 easy steps to get rid of your toothache:
- Mix the garlic with the peanut butter to form a paste.
- Apply the paste freely around the affected tooth.
- Leave for 30 seconds (or 2 minutes if the pain is high).
- Rinse the mouth with warm salt water.
But why does this work so well?
Now, this strange combination of garlic and peanut butter should not surprise you. Here’s the scientific explanation for which this natural remedy works so well:
Garlic is special because it contains a super-star ingredient called Allicin. This ingredient is a highly effective antiseptic, antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial. Because of all these properties, garlic gives pain relief to the affected area.
Moreover, a study published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine recommends everybody to use mouthwash which contains garlic.
On the other hand, peanut butter contains a substance called Resveratrol. This is also a very powerful antibiotic and antioxidant. Mixing peanut butter with garlic disguises the taste, making it more pleasant.
Another reason for which Resveratrol is good for your health is that it has anti-aging properties. As scientists have discovered, a small dose of dietary Resveratrol slows down the aging parameters in mice.
PS: some may experience a mild to moderate burning/stinging sensation if they use raw garlic. Don’t worry; this will pass very quickly and is not harmful!
